I’ll be posting capsule reviews on movies that I’d seen during the past week. (Spoiler alert!) I enjoyed both!
EDGE OF TOMORROW:
Thrilling, savvy, and ingenious, EDGE OF TOMORROW treks on the familiar DNAs of science fiction but veers from mimicking the genre’s key plots through a solid narrative of its own. By relieving (and winning) the battle against aliens between ‘game overs’ and ‘checkpoints’, the Tom Cruise starrer turns out to become an entertaining and well-rounded action thriller in an effective video game format.
HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2:
Sustaining its predecessor’s impressive elements, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 hatches an audacious story line that crosses unchartered terrains and soars to new emotional heights.
It’s a gustier flight for Hiccup, Toothless, and co. as they tumble into the alpha of all dragons, a short-lived family reunion, and an endangering outsider to the peaceful co-existence between humans and dragons. Matching the maturity of its characters that further thickens the emotional core of the animated series; the sequel unravels confidently and promises that there is no shortage of adventure for the next installment.
– The 102-minute dragon ride is more enjoyable and visually stunning in 3D but the cinematography is still striking even at the naked eye. (I would have added an 0.5 if I saw it in 3D.)
– Comparing the sequels, HTTYD2 successfully humanizes the dragons; unlike in ‘Despicable Me 2’ that only warrants the upcoming ‘Minion Movie’.
– HTTYD2 added an incredible voice cast: Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, Kit Harington (who is still in the snow), & Djimon Hounsou (His dragon cawing is convincing, but quite disturbing.).
